The cry is often heard: 'Keep religion out of politics.' The religious vote is welcome but the critical religious comment is not. But we cannot keep the Lord of life out of politics or any other aspect of life. That is what the Laodiceans wanted to do. It suited them to keep the spiritual out of religion. They just wanted to enjoy their affluence without having to face up to spiritual demands. They were blind to their own real needs but Christ would not leave them to themselves. He challenged them concerning their sins. These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: (Revelation 3.14-17) The Lord Jesus Christ goes on to urge them to address their real needs. I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. (Revelation 3.18)
The aged among us remember the sovereigns when the pound was regarded as being 'as good as gold' and that all over the world. Now we are told that we need the Euro, that we need a new currency. Christ says 'No Euro', 'No pound' and 'No Gold'. His counsel is that we buy gold from him. The real need is for a spiritual currency. In the Lord's Prayer we are taught to pray: 'forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.' We need forgiveness. We cannot pay off our debt to God. We have no currency of the kind that could begin to make payments. We are already under sin; our every deed is defective in some way. By works of the law no flesh shall be justified. It is Christ who has made the difference. He has paid the price. He has atoned for sin. His shed blood is of infinite worth. He calls to sinners to come to him, to buy from him and to take what he is able to give.
Dress tells us a lot about a person. The poor man is in rags. These Laodiceans were naked. They did not have a shred of cover with regard to their spiritual needs. They had neglected the most important things like so many today. Jack Pot is the interest of many. He is clothed in tenners. He is 'made of money'. It would be better if he was clothed in trainers, children's trainers. People might then see the true situation. They want to win the jackpot. They are so keen to have the millions. But the winner of the jackpot wins the shoes and clothing of other people's children. All those children are less well off because of the money that their parents put on the lottery. In any event the pound will not be forever. Christ says: 'You need some proper clothing', even white garments that really clothe a person in the sight of God. He is holy and his standard is perfect righteousness. None of us can come up to that standard but Jesus Christ did. By his perfect life and atoning death he has righteousness to cloth those who believe upon him so that they might be justified by faith. There is nothing left to chance here.
Jesus Christ makes people fit, as they have never been before. True believers are healed and restored. That is why Jesus Christ can close the inner city overnight casualty units so that the saved costs can be diverted to reducing NHS waiting lists in a real way. You may be skeptical. How could Jesus Christ do such a thing? It is rather obvious. Very many overnight casualties are in one way or another self-inflicted or avoidable injuries. Jesus Christ heals the soul, he makes the spiritually blind to see. They walk in newness of life, the drunkenness is left behind, the drugs are left behind, and there is no more reckless driving for that person and no more violence. The believer lives a new life. How different it would have been for those seven north-eastern boys who took a cocktail of drugs and alcohol. If they had found Christ first they would never have wanted the drugs and would never have damaged themselves.
The true witness says, 'You like buying, then buy of me.' That's the message. It will be a different experience because it's all free. Jesus Christ makes no charges. He gives and gives and gives. He puts it clearly through his prophet: Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. (Isaiah 55.1-2)
